Clothing Fabric
Fabric is one of those materials people rarely think about until it’s wrong, too stiff, too thin, prone to pilling, and rarely think about when it’s right. At Hayleys Fabric PLC, getting it right is the entire job: producing fabric that holds its shape, feels the way it’s supposed to, and performs consistently across the thousands of metres that go into a single order, for brands whose customers will never see our mill but will absolutely notice if the fabric underperforms.
Types of Clothing Fabrics
Fabric is generally classified by where its fibres come from, and increasingly, by how it’s expected to perform once it’s made into a garment. Every fabric traces back to fibres that are either natural, human-made, or a blend of the two.
Natural fibres come from plant or animal sources, with cotton making up the largest share of this category by volume. Silk, linen, wool, leather, ramie, jute and hemp are other familiar examples, each valued for qualities, breathability, durability, a particular handfeel, that are difficult to fully replicate synthetically.
Synthetic, or man-made, fibres are produced industrially through chemical processes, engineered for specific properties depending on what they’re finished to do. Polyester, nylon, rayon, denim, chiffon, organza, georgette and velvet are common examples, chosen for characteristics like stretch, durability, or a particular drape that a natural fibre alone might not deliver.
Our Fabric
At Hayleys Fabric, we work across all three categories: natural fibres like cotton, regenerated cellulose fibres such as viscose, modal, micro modal and tencel, and specialty fibres including wool, cashmere and silk. We can blend virtually any combination of yarn to create novel weft-knit fabrics built around what a specific customer actually needs, rather than offering a fixed catalogue and asking brands to work around it.
Our product range spans Single Jersey, Interlock, Pique, Rib, Fleece, Polar Fleece, Jacquard and Flat Knits, and we apply a wide range of value-added finishes on top: printing, brushing, sueding, tumbling, combing, bio-polish (an enzyme treatment), limited stretch through resination, moisture management, and antibacterial finishing, each chosen to give a fabric the specific appearance and functionality a brand is asking for.
In 2014, we launched inno, our own branded fabric line, a genuine milestone that marked our shift from being purely a manufacturer to also being an inventor, developing fabric on our own terms rather than only to a brief.
Because we control fibre selection, knit structure and finishing under one roof, we can move from concept to sample fabric faster than a manufacturer coordinating each stage through separate subcontractors, a real advantage for brands working against a tight seasonal calendar. It’s one of the reasons global fashion, lingerie and performance brands come back to Hayleys Fabric season after season rather than treating us as a single-order supplier.
